A little history
The first Dogwood Festival was held April 19, 1936, started by Walter Rich of Rich’s department store to make Atlanta known for its blooming dogwoods. It stopped during World War II and was revived in 1964. In 2008, a severe drought moved it to Lenox Square for a year before it returned to Piedmont Park. The organizer reported crowds of more than 200,000 in 2002 and 2003. Source: festival history.
