Atlanta has eight city off-leash dog parks. Everywhere else in a city park, on a city trail or in a public space, your dog must be on a leash, and the city says Atlanta police officers will cite owners who let dogs run loose. Source: Leash Up ATL, City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation.

Rules inside the dog parks
Section 110-70 of the city code requires every off-leash area to be fully fenced with double gates, and sets the rules posted at each entrance. The main ones:
- No more than three dogs per owner at a time.
- Every dog wears a collar and ID tag, and is licensed, healthy and vaccinated.
- No puppies under 16 weeks, no dogs in heat and no prong collars.
- Dogs stay in sight and under voice control; owners remove any dog that fights or shows aggression.
- Clean up after your dog and latch both gates.
- Children under 12 only with close adult supervision.
- Only bite-size dog treats; no other food. No bikes, skateboards, jogging or strollers.
- The area can close for bad weather or maintenance.
The leash law in city parks
From Section 110-70, quoted on the city’s Leash Up ATL page:
- Leash required in every park except a designated off-leash area.
- Clean up after your pet.
- No pets, even leashed, in park amphitheaters, swimming pools and pool areas, tennis courts, golf courses, lakes or the zoo, or within 15 feet of fences and structures.
- No pets during the larger permitted festivals (class A, B and C outdoor festivals); pets are allowed at the smaller class D and E events.
- Guide dogs, service dogs and police dogs are exempt from the area and festival bans.
Grant Park has its own rule, Section 110-70.1: because of the zoo, dogs are allowed only in certain areas of the park, on a leash and under control.
Dog-friendly patios and shopping
- Park Tavern at Piedmont Park advertises a dog-friendly patio with views over the park; phone 404-249-0001 (Park Tavern).
- Atlantic Station, 1380 Atlantic Drive NW, allows leashed dogs and cats under the owner’s control and publishes a list of pet-friendly stores and restaurants. Pets are not allowed on Atlantic Green and must use the designated pet waste areas (Atlantic Station FAQ).
We add patios to this list only when the restaurant’s own website says dogs are welcome.
