This week
GDOT’s 511 list on Oct. 6 showed one scheduled lane closure inside the city for the coming days:
- State Route 3 southbound at Magnolia Street: right lane blocked from 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, to 3 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11.
On Monday, Oct. 5, GDOT crews closed single lanes in daytime work, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on state Route 9 at Pharr Road, state Route 3 at University Avenue, state Route 54 at Metropolitan Parkway and U.S. 78 at Marietta Boulevard, where two lanes were blocked. Short daytime closures like these are posted on 511 a day or two ahead. This section is rewritten every week from GDOT, 511 and city notices.
The big state project: I-285/I-20 West interchange
GDOT is rebuilding the interchange of I-285 and I-20 on the west side of the metro area, in Cobb, Douglas and Fulton counties, according to its project page. The work includes:
- rebuilding the interchange to remove left-hand exits, and modifying or replacing bridges and ramps;
- an I-20 westbound collector-distributor system, lanes that run alongside the interstate, from the interchange to Fulton Industrial Boulevard;
- added lanes and improvements on about eight miles of I-20 in both directions, from Thornton Road to Hamilton E. Holmes Drive in Atlanta;
- new or modified bridges on I-20, including those over the CSX railroad and the Chattahoochee River; and
- a new lane on two miles of I-285 southbound from Hollowell Parkway to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, inside the city.
Lane and ramp closures for the project are posted on 511. Check it before any drive on I-285 or I-20 west of downtown, and sign up for GDOT’s project updates through the program site.
Future express lanes on I-285
GDOT plans express lanes on the northern half of I-285, between the I-20 interchanges on the east and west sides, under a public-private partnership, its I-285 Express Lanes page says. The plan is two barrier-separated express lanes in each direction. GDOT says designs and environmental studies for the Westside and Eastside sections are still being developed.
City streets
ATLDOT runs paving, sidewalk, bike lane and intersection projects across the city and posts traffic advisories and community meetings on its website. It also issues the right-of-way permits that contractors need to work in a city street. Report a pothole, a dark signal or a missing sign to ATL311; interstates and state routes are GDOT’s.
