Georgia high school seniors can apply free to more than 60 colleges Nov. 1-30, including Georgia Tech and Georgia State. The codes and steps for Atlanta schools.
Georgia high school seniors can apply to more than 60 of the state’s colleges and universities for free in November. The waivers run Sunday, Nov. 1, through Monday, Nov. 30.
The Georgia Student Finance Commission announced the program Tuesday. It runs with the University System of Georgia, the Technical College System of Georgia and private colleges, the commission said in its release.
There is no limit on how many schools a senior can apply to with the waivers, the commission said. This is the sixth year it has promoted free applications in November.
The Atlanta schools taking part
Six schools in the city are on the list of participating colleges on GAfutures, the commission’s student site. Each school has its own steps:
| School | How to get the waiver |
|---|---|
| Georgia Tech | On the Common Application, answer “Yes” in the General section to having graduated or graduating from a Georgia high school, or to being a Georgia resident attending high school out of state |
| Georgia State University, Atlanta campus | On the Common Application, choose “Apply to College Month” under the school-specific fee waiver questions, then answer “Yes” to attending a Georgia high school |
| Georgia State University, Perimeter College | Enter fee waiver code ACM2027 |
| Atlanta Technical College | Enter code NOVFREE27 |
| Atlanta Metropolitan State College | No step needed; its fee is always waived |
| South College, Atlanta | Choose “Pay Later” when applying |
Several schools close to the city are on the list as well:
- Agnes Scott College in Decatur, about seven miles east: fee waived automatically
- Clayton State University in Morrow, about 15 miles south: fee waived automatically
- Kennesaw State University, about 25 miles northwest: choose “Apply to College Month” under the Common Application’s school-specific fee waiver question
- Georgia Piedmont Technical College in Clarkston and Chattahoochee Technical College in Marietta: code NOVFREE27
- Mercer University: code BETHEBEAR on the Mercer or Common Application
Every school in the Technical College System on the list uses the same code, NOVFREE27.
Morehouse College, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Emory University and Oglethorpe University do not appear on the GAfutures November list as of Tuesday. Seniors applying there should check each school’s own fee policy.
The fastest route for public colleges
Seniors who apply to public colleges through the GEORGIA MATCH direct admissions dashboard in November get the fee waived automatically, the commission said. GEORGIA MATCH is reached through a student’s GAfutures account.
“Georgia seniors do not have to choose between paying application fees and pursuing the next step in their higher education journey,” commission President Chris Green said in the release.
Gov. Brian Kemp said the state is “grateful that many top-ranking USG, TCSG, and private institutions have agreed to allow Georgia seniors to apply for free during Apply to College Month.”
What it means for you
- Seniors only. The waivers are for Georgia high school seniors. Most schools’ waivers apply only to applications submitted between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30.
- Check the steps before you submit. Some fees drop automatically; others need a code or a specific answer on the Common Application. The GAfutures list gives each school’s admissions email for questions.
- Apply to more than one. There is no cap on the number of free applications, so a senior can add a reach school and a technical college at no cost.
- Get help. The commission says students can book a meeting with a regional outreach representative at GAfutures.org/outreach. Atlanta Public Schools seniors can also ask their school counselor; see our guide to Atlanta public schools.
